The History of The Halo

1845: The Oval cricket ground is established.
1879: Gasholder No. 1 construction is completed, including a supermarket and gasworks infrastructure.
2014: The gasholders are decommissioned, leaving the site vacant.
2018: After extensive consultation with Lambeth Council, Historic England, and local residents, planning permission for 738 homes is granted.
2019: The 9-acre Oval Village project begins under developer Berkeley Homes. The former gasworks and Tesco site undergoes preparation.
2021: Construction starts on the first residential buildings. Initial occupants move into completed phases. A temporary Tesco opens.
2022: A new permanent Tesco supermarket opens on-site.
2023: The Grade II listed gasholder frame is designated to remain in situ.
2024: Restoration of the 145-year-old gasholder frame begins alongside continued residential construction.
May 2025: A topping-out ceremony is held for The Halo, the unique residential building being constructed within the gasholder frame.
June 2025: Homes within The Halo phase are released for sale.
Q1/Q2 2028: The first residents are expected to move into The Halo, the apartments built inside the gasholder.
Early 2029: The entire Oval Village project, including its residential units, commercial and leisure facilities, and landscaped public space, is anticipated to be completed.
